WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE HUMAN IN AN INCREASINGLY DIGITAL WORLD?

HP believes the best way to get more out of our devices is to spend less time in front of them. We helped them start a conversation about our relationship with our devices. The centerpiece of the initiative was “Wake Up”, a provocative short film by Olivia Wilde, and starring Margaret Qualley, asking the question: what does it mean to be human in an increasingly digital world?

We exist in two dimensions simultaneously:
the organic and the virtual. We bounce between them, shifting the directions of our neural pathways in a flash, casually, as though it weren’t an evolutionary miracle that we are capable of straddling two forms of consciousness simultaneously. But surely, the goal is to maintain a balance. If we devote too much of our focus on the virtual world, no matter how spectacular, we will lose the senses that make us human.

It is possible to find that balance, but many of us need an awakening to bring us there.

The short film acted as the focal point of a live activation, premiering at Sundance as part of a standing-room-only event featuring a panel discussion on the intersection of mindfulness and technology, lead by Olivia Wilde and best-selling author Ingrid Fetell Lee, and moderated by podcaster Aminatou Sow.
